My Life as a Teenage Artist… [part one]

So, I just finished my first legit track tonight. And I have to say, I’ve always loved and respected emcees for their craft and love writing tracks, but recording, mixing and mastering is really… really… REALLY exhausting.I have a newfound respect for emcees who mix down their own vocals.

I’m sitting here right now with a banging headache wondering how I knocked this out, sick of this verse because I heard it about 50 or 60 times in the past 12 hours… but I’m loving the result. The track was actually finished a few days ago, but I went back in to mix it in a different program (Logic Pro) than what I recorded in (GarageBand.)

Originally I thought it was okay, but some of my friends and associates who i do music with humbled me really quick and told me it needed WORK. Thankfully I knew someone who was working with Logic and gave me some tips, and a friend directed me towards some tutorials today and I used those too…

So as an Emcee/Producer/Engineer(?) as of today I learned about bussing tracks, EQing, Compression and Reverb… I knew about most of this stuff before producing, but its completely different when you’re recording vocals instead of just dropping beats, not to say beat making is easy though.

But anyways, I don’t like to rant without saying something somewhat helpful. So this is just a little message to my aspiring Emcees/Producers/etc out there. Learn to mix your own vocals! You don’t always get access to a studio, and sometimes your studio may not even be giving you the most bang for your buck.. know what I mean. If you invest the time, before you invest the money you may end up coming off with a huge bargain in your pockets for the sacrifice of some time, because if you want to take this seriously, you’re not going to always do the most exciting things in the world.

So if you learn anything from this blog. Don’t underestimate/under-appreciate any artist who does things on their own. Their stuff may not even sound the best in the world, but they can do it on their own, and if you can’t do that there’s no reason for you to knock them.

Shoutouts to Chris Bell, Slik D, Nefarious!, memorecks and D from Sound Society… I don’t know where I’d be without people like you… forreal.

and if I missed anyone I sincerely apologize

Peace, love and taco shells

-Dom

P.S: I’ll post the track soon
